Nobody likes coming home to a cold house. When well-maintained, your HVAC system should be pretty reliable. But sometimes, things can still go wrong.
If your heat kicks off, just don’t panic. It could be something simple that you can address on your own. But, if none of these DIY troubleshooting tips help your heating system, the Philadelphia HVAC experts at Joseph Giannone Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning are just a phone call — or a click — away.
Check Your Thermostat
Some heating problems can be diagnosed and fixed right at the thermostat. Check to make sure your thermostat has power. Some thermostats use batteries, so try replacing them.
Next, check the settings. Is the thermostat set to “heat?” If the fan is running, make sure it’s set to “auto” instead of “on.”
Check Your Electric
Your furnace should have a service switch on the side or just above it. Make sure this is turned on. Now, take a look at your home’s electrical panel to see if the breaker for your HVAC system is tripped. If it is, switch the breaker back on and give the unit 15 minutes to restart.
Check Your Fuel
If your furnace runs on natural gas, check to make sure the pilot light is lit. If it’s not, check your owner’s manual or instruction sticker and follow instructions for lighting it again. If you smell the rotten eggs odor of natural gas, turn the system off immediately and call a professional.
Next, check to see if the door panels are secured properly. Newer models have safety switches that cut the unit off if the doors aren’t secure. You can keep a cold-house disaster at bay with regular maintenance and tune-ups from an HVAC professional like your Philadelphia neighbors at Giannone.
