Is a Ductless Mini-Split the Right Choice?

Mini-Split HVAC is Good for Some Homes, Bad for Others

It’s time to clear the air about ductless mini-split HVAC systems. These heating and cooling systems connect a wall-hanging AC unit with an outdoor compressor/condenser using only a three-inch hole in your walls to connect the two. Proponents say they save energy by letting you heat or cool certain zones or rooms in your home. And their small footprint might make them seem like a more cost-effective choice.

But wait. While there are certain homes and situations in which a mini-split solution is best, these units are not ideal or even functional in every home. In some cases, they might even make your energy bill higher and your home less comfortable.

The service experts at Giannone Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning want our Philadelphia neighbors to have the most comfortable, cost-effective heating and cooling available. That’s why we give honest, upfront recommendations when you call us for an estimate. That includes whether a mini-split system is really the best choice for you.

Got Ducts?

In general, if you home already has ductwork, we recommend that you stick with a traditional ducted HVAC system. Concerns about ducted systems losing efficiency due to leaks can be remedied with a simple duct inspection and repair. Concerns about ducted systems and indoor air quality can be addressed with a whole-home air cleaner and sanitizer.

Renovating or Remodeling?

If you are lucky enough to be restoring one of our historic homes here in Philly, a mini-split system might be the right choice for you. In fact, any home that doesn’t already have ductwork might be a perfect candidate for a mini-split system.

Likewise, if you have added a room to your home, like a bonus room or workshop, a mini-split might be the right choice. Your existing HVAC is the right size for the original square footage of your home, and a mini-split will take care of the addition.

Where Mini-Splits Go Wrong

If you choose a mini-split HVAC system, it’s important that it is installed correctly and that you learn to use it properly. Since each unit heats or cools a room or zone of your home, inconsistency between zones can lead to humidity imbalance and make your home less comfortable. You might even find that your energy bills are higher with a ductless system if it’s not correctly installed and operated.

A qualified AC installation expert will be able to make solid recommendations for your home’s heating cooling and show you the right way to use the equipment correctly. If you’re considering upgrading or replacing your homes HVAC, the professionals at Giannone will give you honest, upfront recommendations and fair estimates.
